Still can’t believe it’s over so soon but last Tuesday was the final of this years Battle of the Bands and it was a good one. So many different bands with really different styles but not one I didn’t like. Probably the best final I’ve seen in the 3 years I’ve been photographing it, or at least the one I enjoyed the most.
Opening the night was Nothing Left who were one of only 2 bands I hadn’t previously seen. Having heard nothing about them I literally had no idea what to expect but ended up loving them. They had some serious energy up there and owned that stage, it was such a great way to start the night. Bands like this always make the best subjects to photograph because they have the best poses, they’re always moving and they just look like they’re having fun which is exactly what you want to capture. Really liked these guys.
The next band were Jordan and the Sketcheads. I love this band and I love their music (although a little part of me does hate how long their songs get stuck in my head for…) and I think they’re great. They’re definitely one of my favourites to photograph – again it’s about capturing fun and these guys looked like they were having a lot of it. They were busy jumping around stage and really getting into their music which is always great to see and it makes for the best kind of gig photos!
Up next were the only other band I’d not heard before, GILA MONSTER. All I’d heard is that they were ‘yeah, surprisingly good’ so didn’t really know what to expect and a part of me still doesn’t really know what to think of them. It was a strange mix of bizarre and genius that I couldn’t quite wrap my little brain around but I was definitely entertained. And if I’m honest, yeah, I’d want to see them again.
Instinct By Default were incredible, as always. They’re clearly a very professional, well rehearsed band, they know their style, there music is going in a clear direction, it’s just for me I can’t quite love them. I’m not sure what’s missing… but regardless of that they gave an incredible performance!
Cactus Body slam next and, again, they were a lot of fun. I definitely enjoyed them a lot more than in the heats and they were a lot of fun to photograph.
Last on were Asian Death Crustacean (who I’m completely annoyed had the worst lighting of the entire night for photos) and they were great again. Honestly, not really my style of music, but I can see why they really did deserve to win.
So that was the final and it was a really incredible night. Thing is, when you’re taking loads of photos of people you tend to get a couple which aren’t the most flattering and normally they get deleted but seeing as it is the final…
I’m only a little bit sorry for this.
The Boar wrote a really great article about the night which you can read here.
Facebook album with all my photos is here.
Only thing left to say is a massive thank you to Dan and all the guys from BandSoc for letting me go along every week, I had so much fun and I just really want to encourage anyone reading to go give all the bands a listen and give them lots of support!
